Where a person starts to attack himself, to harm himself, we instantly recognize that there is significant mental illness. Now the state is doing it. The state is, to put it plainly; nuts.
The state is at war with us citizens, especially with men. The war is truly cruel and savage. Many persons are killed (or "executed" since the state is doing it). Many, many more are captured and imprisoned. It's a true mania. Across the nation there are almost 2,000,000 prisoners of this war.
Not all the states are equally infected with the war-illness. North Dakota, for example, hates its citizens much less than the average. North Dakota imprisons 2 out of each 1000 of it's men; a frightening excess, to be sure, but far less than most other states.
By contrast, Texas detests its citizens. A man in Texas is 6 1/2 times as likely to be imprisoned as the same man in North Dakota. In Texas, 13 out of every 1000 men are in prison. Many have been killed and more will be. Like other states, Texas simply likes to harm its citizens. It's nuts!
The war of the states against the citizens is almost as savage in Louisiana and Oklahoma as in Texas. Pity the man unfortunate enough to live in Louisiana. He's over 6 1/4 times as likely to be imprisoned as the man in North Dakota. The man in Oklahoma is 5.75 times as likely!
A few of the states seem less insane. Besides North Dakota, Minnesota, Maine and Vermont imprison fewer than 3 of every 1000 of their men. Pennsylvania is far worse! Of every 1000 men in Pennsylvania 5.6 are imprisoned. They are mostly black and poor. The state is especially hostile toward blacks and the poor.
Perhaps you would like to share some statistics which have been adapted form those published by the United States Department of Justice. America really likes to kill its citizens. It kills 1204 of its citizens for each 100 million population, or at least that's how many are sentenced to be killed. But could you guess which state hates its citizens most? Where do you think you have the "best" chance of your state killing you? Nevada! The poor citizen of Nevada is 4.4 times as likely to be killed by the state than the national average. Here are the standings for the worst states:
