Bully Badly Beaten
By: Elas Mason

We deplore violence. We deplore the common prison violence of gangs of guards beating prisoners. We also deplore the rare instances of prisoners beating guards.

Recently a prisoner thrashed a guard in a prison messhall. The guard had been harassing, bullying and badgering the prisoner. The prisoner did his best to take it, but he felt this masculinity and pride had been impugned in front of his peers. He finally dropped his food tray and lit into the guard, beating him severely.

Without in anyway excusing the violence, we must report that the guard had a long history of being a jerk. He was a large, heavy man who'd already had problems at the Camp Hill prison. He was in the habit of trying to provoke and demean prisoners. The prison administration was aware of his attitude, but did nothing to correct his provocative behavior. The whole prison is mismanaged.

The guard who got his butt kicked was one of more than a dozen lounging around the filthy messhall at lunch time. Two of these highly paid guardians of law and order just eyeball the food trays. They're paid to make sure that no prisoner gets an "extra" scrap of food. The whole meal is worth only about 35 cents. The genius prison administration pays over 100 times that much to keep a prisoner from getting an extra soggy crust of bread.

Mobs of other overpaid guards mill about with nothing much to do but daydream or harass. Some guard plastic utensils. Others guard trash. Most badger disfavored prisoners.

On this occasion, the prisoner was having a bad day. He pinned the guard to the floor and punched him in his thick head. The other guards took their time breaking it up. Everyone recognized the guy was a jerk. Of course, that's no excuse to mop up the dining room floor with the back of his head.
