| One of the recent emails we've received is from a woman
in Grapeville, Pennsylvania. She is one of those rare and wonderful people
who is loyal and loving; priceless human qualities. Her email relates to
her imprisoned father. We reproduce a slightly edited part of it below.
In response to her inquiry we referred her to Pennsylvania CURE, to Robert Frantz's Parole Relief and to the Pennsylvania Prison Society. We make only one further observation: good offspring can come only from good parents. "I am so glad to stumble across your website. I've been looking for one such as yours for years. "My father [has been] in prison for over 17 years. His crimes were perjury and conspiracy to commit murder. He's been denied parole 3 times now and he's coming up for parole again in June. "I am trying [in every way I know] to get parole granted to him. No one seems to want to help. They all say [that] his case is too old, [that] he may as well wait out his [maximum] sentence, or they say that he's a monster (which is what the [legal system has] made him out to be). "But, considering he's spent 17 years in prison, he's still a kind and loving father. He only wants to spend the remainder of his years with his children and grandchildren, and to see the outdoors. "I believe in prisoners' rights. I hear firsthand horror stories: solitary confinement, eating bugs for dinner, people spitting in your food, human waste thrown on you, being beaten by guards, prisoners' property stolen by guards, no/poor medical treatment. A prisoner is serving the sentence the court has given him, but there is no law as to how these [imprisoned] human beings should be treated [in prison]. "If anything, they should be given extra care. Just as [we give] extra care to a handicapped individual or [to] anyone else with a disability. They need learning and coping programs to help them re-enter society. "Why do [some] prisoners go back to jail? It's because all they were taught in jail is how to become worse than they were. We need to reconstruct our institutions." Editor's Notice: We would like to help in the formation of a group or organization which will somehow give actual help to persons to get parole. Interested persons, please contact us. |
