We've Been
BANNED! In Alaska!

By: Joann Fainie

Recently a correspondent from the former Russian province of Alaska informed us that our harmless little web site has been BANNED by their Department of Corrections! As I understand it, the brave officials of the Alaskan prison system have decided that our few words are just too dangerous to be allowed in to prisoners!

Of course no prisoners, that I know of, can access our site directly, although that may not be true in the more civilized countries of Europe. Many families and loved ones printout interesting items from our popular site and mail them to prisoners (not to mention, to politicians and cops). Well, that's out in Alaska. Prisoners in that cold stop are deprived of our press and we are deprived of the right to write to them.

So, we wrote to the Jerk In Charge of the Alaskan prisons. We asked him why? how come? what for? We said we want to sue over his abridgement of our right of freedom of the press. He didn't answer.

Alaska doesn't have very many prisoners. The whole population of the state is only about 600,000; about the same as Bucks or Delaware counties Pennsylvania, but its more than 14 times as big as all of Pennsylvania. You'd think that pioneers in a place like that would have more things to worry about than the remarks on our little web site.

But, what we have to say, must strike a nerve or expose a dirty secret. The Brass in the former Russian possession doesn't want us to write to the impressionable prisoners of their state. They must be afraid of words. I thought they had grizzly bears and pumas and other really dangerous stuff in Alaska, why should they be afraid of words from Pennsylvania?

I think that Alaska has a Governor who can read and write English. He may be Ivan Romanov, I'm not sure. Once I find out for certain, I'm going to complain to him. I want to know what our sister members of the press in Alaska think of his censorship.

Did you know that Alaska is the only state where there are more reindeer than hogs (in fact, more than hogs and cattle put together!), where vast areas have never-ever gotten even a drop of rain? DId you know that the most famous Alaskan is Tom Bodett, the "Motel 6" guy?

There's a PRISONERS web site in Alaska, www.prisoners.org, (no affiliation with us). I'll have to mail them to see if Tom Bodett is the Governor up there. I can't imagine that a guy "with the light on" would be afraid of our few words. Before you waste your time and tourist dollars visiting Alaska, maybe you should ask why they need to censor the press.
