Innocent men often don't like saying that they're guilty, not
even to get parole. Many Pennsylvania prisoners aren't guilty
of the crimes for which they are imprisoned. This is especially
true for accused sex offenders. Perhaps as many as 30% of those
convicted of a sexual crime didn't do what they are being punished
for. We personally know several such men.
It should be remembered that children and scorned or vengeful women are not reliable sources of sexual accusation. Several of the prisons operate sex offender groups. The idea behind the groups is to humiliate the prisoner. The programs have no therapeutic benefit. They do, however serve an important aim for prosecutors. In order to hope for parole, a man must participate in one of the sex offender groups. In order to participate, he must "admit" guilt. No matter if he committed the offense or not, he must say that he did. Such "confessions" are often used to charge the man with additional offenses. The Parole Board also requires that a man admit guilt to crimes which he beat at trial or which were dropped or which weren't even charged! The Parole Board wants to perpetuate the myth that all convicted persons are guilty. They aren't. The Board wants to perpetuate the myth that if the cops say a person has done something, it's automatically true. It isn't. Why do we have a court system? Sexual offenders should be treated exactly like any other offenders. It must be remembered that many of them are not guilty. |
